In 1993, while on the lookout for a suitable bag in which they could transport their drawings on their bicycles, two graphic design students, Markus and Daniel Freitag, took their cue from urban bike couriers. Functional, water-repellent and strong – those were the criteria necessary for their ideal bag. The colorful transport trucks passing by their apartment every day along Zurich’s transit route provided the inspiration for the perfect material – their bags would need to be just as resilient against wind and rain.
Starting with this idea, they developed a messenger bag using old truck tarpaulins, used bicycle tires and seatbelts in the living room of their shared apartment. The old tarps were washed in the bathtub, then cut between the sofa and the television and sewn into the first FREITAG messenger bags on Mom’s sewing machine. Even today, every bag is handmade and unique. Unbeknownst to them, the brothers’ creation released a wave of innovation in the world of bags, and the Individual Recycled Freewaybags from Zurich have been conquering the world ever since.
The truth doesn’t have to hurt
Today, of course, the Fundamentals line comprises more than just messenger bags. The assortment has now expanded to over 40 models that can comfortably carry smartphones, laptops, sweaty t-shirts, secret love letters, and much more.
