We’re tickled pink about our new partner on the other side of the Channel – legendary British record shop ROUGH TRADE! The shops in Nottingham and London now offer the largest selection of *Recycled Individual Products in Great Britain. And since we were so pleased about everything, we also whipped up a limited special edition of our DJ bag F21 NIGHTCLUB, which is now available at those two locations only.
It’s always been the same up until now: Apple launches a new generation of one of its devices and FREITAG brings out a matching tarp sleeve to slip it into and protect it. Now that Apple has brought out the iPhone 6 in two sizes, FREITAG is doubling things up – with two different protective carrier systems for each of them. There is the familiar distinctive, close-fitting, top-security SLEEVE and the double-sided POUCH for smartestphones and everything else that you might need in a pinch.
It doesn’t get any more minimalistic than this – and on multiple levels at the same time: F251 KOWALSKI is the Naked Bike among backpacks and the Max Bill of FREITAG’S recycled tarp bags. Two simple tarp pieces without an inner lining form the main bag, and the two tarp straps that are attached act as both shoulder carriers and an automatic fastening system. A backpack needs nothing else, and nothing else makes the color of a recycled truck tarp stand out better than the design of this backpack.
F251 KOWALSKI is the backpack kissed by the tarp minimalist muse. In concrete terms, it’s wearable art that’s weatherproof and ready for whatever the day may bring. F251 KOWALSKI, now available online and offline.
Just like our bags, the official book about FREITAG is also currently making its way around the world. „FREITAG – Ein Taschenbuch“ appeared in 2012 and was exhibited at Zurich’s Museum of Design. It has since been translated into English (FREITAG – Out of the Bag), Korean and Japanese (see pictures from the launch in September in Tokyo). We are now very excited about the brand-new French version published by Helvetiq Verlag: “L’affaire est dans le sac”.
We toasted to it last week at the launch in Lausanne – avec les frères FREITAG and l'écrivain Renate Menzi.
For years we’ve had the privilege of using this space to make you aware of new products made from old, discarded truck tarpaulins. Now for the first time we have news about products made from a new material!
It’s called F-ABRIC and is developed in-house by FREITAG: textiles produced in Europe made from European bast fibers, robust and yet 100 % compostable. The fabric of the future made from forgotten plan fibres will hit the stores today: available as workpant, workdress, t-shirt (male und female), longsleeve (male und female) and concept bag.
F201 PETE is the new FREITAG everyday-everything carrier – the handy younger brother of the multiuse city bags F74 BOB and F75 LELAND. Like all babies of big families, little PETE wanted to have something of his very own to make him different from the others. So, instead of having just one shoulder strap like his big-brother heroes, we decided to give him two, making this new lightweight neither a hand- nor a shoulder bag but rather the first-ever FREITAG hand-backpack. The fact that you can easily and chiropractically strap F201 PETE onto your back is probably the healthiest incidental fact in the world.
Why not go against the flow even though the current makes conformity soooo easy? Today’s eyes-wide-open dreamers know that Mr. Right and perfection don’t exist – yet they continue to search relentlessly for them. Everyday insanity is their everyday reality, and R120 AUSTEN is the everyday bag for women who make every day extraordinary. The reincarnation of a tough truck tarp, this delicate piece of haute maroquinerie is the perfect companion for stylishly breaking through all those stuffy barriers.
So far, life hasn’t become quite so digital as the telephone has. Even the most progressive, best-equipped digital nomads can’t do everything on their smartphones yet and still need a bike key, credit card, some cash, a comb or whatever when they have to nip out for a bit. It’s a good thing the new, double-sided FREITAG protective pouches made from tough, recycled truck tarps have arrived. You can fit in everything you need, both digital and analog, when you have to go out for a while. A wide range of smartphones fit in the one side, and the other side is for everything that you would end up kicking yourself for if you didn’t have it.
To celebrate the reopening of the container tower and the Zurich pre-launch of R120 AUSTEN, we invited our lady friends from rundfunk.fm to the “One Night of Female Power Live from the FREITAG Tower”. The rain prevented the girls from broadcasting direct from the tower, unfortunately, but the evening was still a colossal, almost never-ending hit…
With the new F312 FOLDER for iPad Air™, FREITAG is catapulting the genus of folders and covers into a new dimension of user-friendliness: sturdy, recycled truck tarps envelop your fragile device and protect it without wasting too much space. However, when the going gets tough, the slim, soft tarp folder transforms in milliseconds into a stable iPad upright holder or a firm writing platform thanks to clever folding technology and top-secret structural tricks. The new tarp folder thus has the chance to unfold its full potential with absolute freedom on two different levels, because, as with all FREITAG products, everyone will find their own completely personalized, personalitycomplementing unique specimen.
We have once again focused on our core competency – optimizing life for all urban cyclists. The result is the FREITAG messenger bag quartet, jam-packed with 20 years of experience and tested as always by bike couriers:
It still exists, that steadfast kinship between high function and style: an asymmetrical bag that hangs on your back, never swings around and, in true biker fashion, always sits as unshakably firm as an upright, symmetrical backpack. What’s more, you don’t have to pull F152 HARPER annoyingly over your head – you can just slip into it, clip it on, tighten it up and pedal off. Even better, you can trust that all the other features of the latest Messenger bag member of the FREITAG core team have been tested by the most critical pro couriers only – just like its predecessors.
F152 HARPER is the product of more than 20 years of FREITAG messenger-bag development experience, resulting in the ideal carry-all for daily hardcore cyclists.
What would a cyclist need if they were stranded on a deserted traffic island or stuck in any other kind of road emergency? The answer to this question begs another – and a much more important one for us: How would you take along all the things you need to carry out bike-saving and life-preserving emergency measures? Together with fixed-gear rider Patrick Seabase, we found the ultimate, recycled and everywhere- hangable answer in the form of a roll-up toolbag: F154 GRANGER is the attachable saddle toolbag for all emergencies, accidents and other unexpected events.
What happens to urban gardening when every last remaining inch of urban green space has been planted and there’s no place left to sew your seeds?
We’ve decided to make the best of the absolutely green-space-free FREITAG Store in Lausanne on behalf of Lausanne Jardins 2014. We’re going underground and declaring the dark basement of the F-Store the “MushRoom”. In collaboration with artist Daniel Ambühl*, we will be cultivating all sorts of edible mushrooms.
We can hardly wait to see how they sprout out of the bottles and crates and look forward to sharing the harvest, if we ever get one, with our F-riends and visitors.
From June 14 to October 11, 2014
FREITAG STORE, Rue Neuve 6, 1003 Lausanne
Monday to Tuesday 10:00 am - 6:30 pm // Saturday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
* DANIEL AMBÜHL (56)
The Swiss artist, author, chair planter and breeder of mushrooms and beetles has been turning interactions with living nature into his profession for the past ten years. He is currently occupying himself with raising insects for human consumption under the theme of “Skyfood” and is writing a book about Goliath beetles.
A good friend is always by your side and watches over you while still giving you absolute freedom. This is just how the innovative FREITAG tarp folder protects and supports the iPhone: Thanks to the bicycleinner- tube-covered clip, it holds on to your smartestphone with an iron yet scratch-free grip, offers protection and gives it all the freedom necessary to exhibit its best features, such as quick, one-handed call answering, smooth snapshots, under-the-table tweeting and hands-free reading or video chatting with gestures included. And just like all really good friends, every FREITAG folder is unique and individual.

May 30, 2014 – FREITAG STORIES
The city of love taken over by bike riders: A few thousand on old and new bicycles from all over Europe and a few new bags made from old truck tarps. It was the third time we were along for the ride at the Béret Baguette in Paris.
May 22, 2014 – FREITAG STORIES
We usually leave sponsoring sports events to someone else and concentrate on being the unofficial outfitter of urban cyclists and button pushers.
However, we make an exception for bike couriers, as was the case last month, when the Corrieri in bici met up in Milan for the ICMC (Italian Cycle Messenger Championship) and showed that they can ride and drink with the best of them.
May 13, 2014 – FREITAG STORIES
The F-Store Hamburg has been freshly renovated and is bursting with bag beauty. A big thank-you goes out to all old and new F-riends for making the reopening a real hit.
The desire to be on the road and leave the everyday behind, to discover new things, and to see the world as new again, accompanies every urban desk jockey just like his fully booked Outlook agenda.
Zurich bag manufacturer FREITAG has decided to resolve the dilemma with some outsourcing and is sending two highly respected reporters on a trip to give those of us doomed to stay at home a chance to participate from afar. The FREITAG Grand Tour combines the educational journey of the last century with the circumstances of today (media, technology, vacation regulations).
In a totally undemocratic election process, photographer Jörg Koopmann and journalist Michael Hugentobler were selected as Grand Tourists. At the beginning of May, they each collected a folding bike, an InterRail ticket, and carte blanche for selecting destinations and topics, and now they are on the road somewhere in Europe – without an objective or a task, except for reporting every now and then on their movements, encounters, and discoveries. So far we have read about the most perilous stroll in the world and we look forward to reading about the solution to the human energy problem, the most unfriendly people in the world, and many surprises both great and small.
The bag that was the beginning of it all, the very first FREITAG model cut from a used truck tarp, was a messenger bag. The bicycle was already the number-one type of inner-city transportation by far at that time and the bike courier the toughest and most demanding bag tester on asphalt.
When you were younger and your mother used to say “you’d do better to carry your heavy stuff on your back in a backpack” (or a “Rucksack”, as our German-speaking mothers said), she was right. And that’s what all bike couriers will tell you today, too. If you had been able to choose a ready-for-anything, one-of-a-kind backpack with a roll-down flap like F151 VICTOR way back then, you probably would have decided that your mother was not only the best ever, but also pretty cool. F151 VICTOR is the padded, variable, fit-it-all-in Messenger backpack with a water-repelling roll-down flap.
Learning from a bike courier means learning how to overcome obstacles – or at least become somewhat faster and more efficient. Everything that is large and heavy is strapped on your back; everything smaller is easiest to access from your hip. It sounds logical in theory and functions just as smoothly in practice during a courier’s daily rounds. F153 JAMIE is the Messenger hipbag that never bends out of shape, thanks to its double-belt anti-torsion system.
Well, we certainly F-eted and toasted the bike couriers of the world. Our speed-camera paparazzo DIRTY TERRY and Dr. F-uentes with his shot bar had a grueling night – they had to shoot and serve more than 2000 times. Here are their best shots and a few impressions from the F-actory. Thanks to all our co-partiers!

“The true renaissance of reportage is not taking place in print but rather online.”
- Jochen Wegner, editor-in-chief of ZEIT ONLINE
In the course of our lecture series “FREITAG am Donnerstag”, we were pleased to welcome Fabian Dietrich and Jochen Wegner in Berlin on March 13. They debated the renaissance of German reportage during the laboratory discussion with Daniel Bernet Puntas.
“I sometimes find myself longing for a world without the internet.”

In January 1874 Alpine journalist W.A.B. Coolidge, known as the young American who climbed with his dog and his aunt, was the first person to attempt – and succeed in – summiting the Jungfrau in the winter.
Today, nerve-racking challenges are no longer awaiting us outdoors at high altitudes but rather downtown during the daily grind, and the daring heroes of today are no longer mountain climbers but rather urban creative workers:
There are no reliable satellite forecasts for their changing situations, and no water-bottle system can provide enough liquidity when bank accounts run dry once again. No thermal underwear can keep them warm during the cold rejections and heated turbulence encountered on the relationship front, and when urban survivalists on bikes are carried away by an avalanche of vehicles, a beeping tracking device won’t be much help. The only thing that today’s heroes need to survive in style is a faithful companion they can rely on – a tough, water- and dirt-repellant, load-swallowing backpack like R521 COOLIDGE.
February 20, 2014 – FREITAG FUNDAMENTALS
Still rather massive a few years ago, the iPad appears to be slowly but surely fading into thin air, so protecting the delicate, fragile device with a unique and inimitable specimen made of tough truck tarps is even more important. And because the iPad Air is so thin, the newest generation of FREITAG sleeves has room for the device, Smart Cover® and all. Available now on- and offline.

‘At the point where language chafes up against reality, and I find a sentence, term or phrase which precisely expresses what I have seen or researched; it is that moment of congruency between what I have researched and what I am expressing that represents the real allure.’ Cordt Schnibben was a guest at ‘FREITAG am Donnerstag’ in the FREITAG Store in Hamburg on January 23. During this 72-minute film, you will find out why the reporter essentially researches his own life and then attempts to recount it through other people’s stories.
